Complete the Ring Road by myself in Iceland

The story

    The hospital promise

    A run of medical issues ended in a hospital bed and a promise I kept: get into the best shape of my life, better than active duty. The point was not aesthetics. It was so the list would still have a body attached to it.

    The list after the wreck

    COVID killed the adventure business I had built and sent me back to DC. I did not want the adventure to die with it. So I wrote a ten year list of everything I actually wanted to do. Most of it is unhinged on purpose.

    I book faster than I remember

    Things come off the list so fast I forget I booked them. See: a camper van in Iceland, a flight the next day, and no itinerary. LinkedIn is where I explained it. The other apps are where the road lives.

    The Ring Road, alone

  1. Before the trip

    I reserved a 4x4 camper for Iceland, packed, and somehow forgot I booked it until I was flying out.

  2. Day 1

    I landed, found waterfalls, picked a remote first night spot, and stayed near a cave when weather blocked the trails.

  3. Day 2

    I explored with Big Bertha, found Baja Blast, chased waterfalls, and slept beside a glacier before the climb.

    I climbed around a glacier in Meta glasses, joked I was ready for Everest, and found icebergs.

    I ran the eastern side toward the northeast. Waterfalls, egg sculptures, geothermal baths on the plan. Gorgeous east coast.
